The Opportunity

The School of Computer Science and Engineering has an opportunity for a Computing Support Officer. The primary focus of this role is to provide end-to-end support to the successful delivery of CSE's technology services to support the School’s administration, research services and teaching objectives. To achieve this, you will work closely with academics, researchers, and professional staff within the School to provide technology support and administrative support competencies across Applications, End-User-Computing, Infrastructure and Cloud services.


This role reports to the Technology and Innovation Manager and has no direct reports


  • Salary, Level 8: $111,044 to $125,115 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed-Term role – 12 months

Skills and Experience

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications with subsequent work experience in information technology, technology management and support or related discipline, preferably with a deep understanding of data centre technologies, systems support, and cloud technologies.
  • Demonstrated strong computing capabilities, including high competency level as a subject matter expert in a relevant technical discipline, web server infrastructure (apache, cgi, flask, javascript etc), database systems (SQL), programming and scripting languages (C, java, shell, perl, python, tcl/tk, awk) and version control (git) skills preferred.
  • Experience working closely with Academics and Researchers and supporting technology in a teaching context is desirable.
  • A demonstrated ability to think creatively and adopt an innovative hands-on approach to problem solving within a small team.
  • Demonstrated strong experience in on-premise Infrastructure, Applications, End user services and Linux skills with the ability to provide expert advice and contribute to resolving technology issues.
  • A performance-oriented approach with strong interpersonal skills and a proven record of effective communication with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Highly developed organisational skills including the ability to prioritise, manage complex tasks and multiple incidents and meet competing deadlines whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply, interpret, advise on and contribute to the development of technology policies, systems, manuals, rules, procedures and guidelines in line with best practice within a technology environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
